Bicycle Safety - 10 Precautions You May Not Have Considered
Because of the high cost of gas lately, I've noticed more people are out riding bikes. It's a great way to get some good exercise and if you have the time to spare, it's a great way to just get around. But bicyclists are in even more danger of being hit by a car than a pedestrian because they are riding close to them, sometimes right in traffic and sometimes in a bike lane right next to traffic.
So if you're going to be spending some time out on the road on your bicycle, just remember to use extreme caution and follow some rules of the road. These are some safety precautions you might not have considered. Everyone knows how important it is to wear a helmet, but that won't keep you from being struck by a car. Being struck in the first place is what we would like to avoid at all cost.
1. Install a headlight on your bike. The importance of this is obvious if you're driving at night, but it can also be useful during daylight hours to make you more visible, especially one with a strobe. Wearing one on your helmet is even better because you can look right at a driver and be sure they see you.
2. If you're coming up to a driveway on your right where a car is waiting to pull out, slow down to a speed where you will be able to stop if you have to. If you have a horn on your bike, use it to get the attention of the driver of the car.
3. When riding your bike beside a string of parked cars, stay as far left as is safely possible so that you are not suddenly faced with a car door opening right in front of you. Many bicyclists have been killed when they have swerved to avoid an opening door and found themselves in the path of a fast moving car or truck. And many have been thrown into the path of a moving vehicle after being struck by a car door or running into a car door that was opened just in front of them. It would be better to ride far enough to the left to avoid any opening doors, even though it puts you in danger of being hit from behind. At least the traffic behind you will see you if you are in their lane and you will be less apt to be struck.
4. Don't ride your bike on a sidewalk. It is dangerous to pedestrians and dangerous to you if you have to cross a street. It's also illegal in many cities. Drivers aren't looking for bikers on the sidewalks and so may not see you as you leave the sidewalk to cross the street.
5. Don't ride against traffic. It is illegal and you can get ticketed for it. But most important, it is very dangerous. A car pulling out from a side street on your left, making a right turn, is not expecting traffic to be coming at them from the left lane, so you are apt to get hit. Also, if you were to be hit by an oncoming car, the impact would be 10 times worse than being hit by a car traveling in the same direction as you are, going close to the same speed.
6. Wear bright clothing if possible. This is something that may help you be seen and that is the main goal when riding among traffic. If the drivers see you, they are less apt to run into you.
7. Adorn your bike with lights. Besides head lights, there are tail lights and lights that you can attach by way of a bungee cord to just about any part of your bike - the handlebars, frame or seat post. They can be flashing or steady. There are also lights that you can wear on your arm or belt. The brighter you are, the more visible you will be to motorists.
8. Use a mirror. They are a great advantage for seeing motorists coming up behind you. Attach it to your bike. There are also small rear-view mirrors you can attach to your helmet. You will feel a lot more confident when you are not having to constantly look behind you to see where traffic is.
9. Choose to ride on slow or back streets when possible. The slower a car is going, the more chance the driver will have of seeing you.
10. If you are riding with traffic and they are passing you too closely, take the whole lane, until you can get to a safer place. It is too dangerous to risk being clipped by a car passing you too closely. You might have motorists honking at you to get out of their lane, but at least they will see you and will not run into you or clip you in passing.
So, congratulations to you for taking the initiative to get some good exercise and conserve gas by riding your bike as much as possible. Just be safe out there.

thebiketube.com A vital step in bicycle wheel building is prepping the spokes with some kind of spoke prep. There are two reasons to prep spokes: 1. Provides lubrication while you are lacing and truing the wheel 2. It becomes like a thread-lock after it the wheel is laced. You can use prep that is manufactured specifically for wheel building or Linseed Oil. They both work well. When building a rear wheel where spoke lengths differ, it's important not to mix the spokes. For this reason, Wheelsmith Spokeprep comes as two colors spoke prep. You use one color for the drive side spokes and the other for the non-drive, which helsp keep them separate when you lace the wheel. Linseed Oil can be found at a local hardware store or Art shop (its used to thin oil paints). The point of spoke prep is to provide some lubrication when lacing and truing the wheel and then to act as a bit of a thread-lock to keep spokes from easily loosening. Whith spokeprep it's important to not use too much. Dip it just to the threads and then roll the excess off.

Bicycle Trailer Review

Bicycle Trailer Review
This article will give you a useful bicycle cargo review; one of the very useful utilities for a bicycle that will allow you to carry cargo that you can't carry using a bicycle rack. Transporting a cargo using a bicycle is not a problem with the invention of bicycle trailers. These trailers are usually nothing but a wheeled frame without any motor. This is attached to a bicycle; expanding its capacity of carrying luggage. It is far more powerful and useful than a bicycle rack since it can tolerate approximately half a ton weight. It can be used to transport objects measuring up to 3 cubic meters.
Major Components of a Bicycle Trailer
A bicycle trailer is a separate utility and has got many vital components like:
* Axle: Just like a bicycle, a trailer has got separate axles for its wheels. Threaded nuts are usually used to mount these axles on to the frame of the trailer. Technically, the base of the carrying area of a trailer is kept below the axles in order to decrease the centre of gravity. * Frame: The frame of a trailer is either a metal frame of a wood frame. If metal frame is being used, it uses aluminum or steel alloy. Another rarely seen frame is the wood frame. Usually bamboo and other materials are used in these frames. * Mud Guard: An optional facility that some trailers may provide for keeping the dirt and other road sprays out of the luggage loaded on the carrier. * Wheel: Wheels used in trailers are usually ordinary bicycle wheels of varying sizes. In order to provide effective suspension for the luggage, Pneumatic Tires are used. Dolly wheels are also considered to be very durable but they bring the disadvantage of rough ride because of the limitation of diameter. * Hitch: Some trailers, depending upon their type; single wheel or two wheels, use various frame hitches. For instance, a single wheel trailer uses a hitch that can be attached to the rear axle of the bicycle. Whereas, hitches for a two wheel trailer have to use a special universal joint to keep the trailer always in the upright position.
Two Major Types of Bicycle Trailers
Various trailers are used for varying purposes. You can distinguish between various types of trailers with respect to their number of wheels, the potential cargo they can carry. Some trailers have got one wheel mounted on the rear axle of the bicycle. The best advantage it provides is the stability in comparison with a two wheel trailer. It offers high speed as compared to two wheel trailers.
On the other hand, you have two wheel trailers which don't provide you with the speed that a single wheel trailer provides but offers much more carrying capacity. However, since it is wider than a single wheel trailer, the probability of hitting objects while riding is greater.
You can also divide trailers in to various types depending upon what they can carry. For instance, some trailers are meant for carrying general cargo while others are used to carry little passengers as a cargo or as a rider. It can also be used for disabled passengers or for pets. The use differs from person to person.
