London Cycle Safety Debate: Cheap Trixi Mirrors Could Save Cyclists' Lives
Cycling in London is dangerous. On average one cyclist is killed every month, and who knows how many others are injured in between. More needs to be done to improve certain stretches and crossroads across the capital.
I was unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end of a close friend of mine being involved in an accident only days after she had bought a bicycle to use in and around London.
Sadly she did not survive the incident as she was crushed to death by an articulated Lorry at 3:20pm on Tuesday 5th April at a very busy and unforgiving crossroads in Camden, which is part of the stretch also known as 'Death Mile'.
The only solace I can get from this very tragic and devastating loss is that it was over for her in a flash, despite paramedics trying to resuscitate her for 40 minutes at the scene. She has left behind many devastated friends and an even more distraught family. She was Paula Jurek and was only 20 years old.
This accident has reopened the cycle safety debate in London and prompted us to try to understand why it has happened and why other cyclists have been killed so frequently on the roads in London. It seems like the effort Boris Johnson has made to encourage people to cycle in London by providing Boris bikes has been a great success along with making more cycle lanes too.
However, with him [Boris Johnson] encouraging people to cycle, he has to improve safety measures with more cyclists on the road in London, especially on certain crossroads to prevent any more fatalities from occurring again. Additionally, precautions need to be taken to save friends and family of the next victim from suffering the aftermath of what I, Paula's friends and family have suffered. It's just a big shame that it takes the death of a much loved and warm hearted young lady to be killed so brutally before any action is taken.
One solution which is so simple and easy to install is the "Trixi" mirror which is used in Switzerland and Germany to great effect. This is a mirror installed on traffic signal heads to enable HGVs to see down the side of their vehicles.
What makes the scarcity of this mirror worse is that this particular mirror would cost very little and could be installed immediately.
So, why are they so scarce in London? Wouldn't the 'Death Mile' in Camden be a good place to start?
After all this is where cyclist Paula Jurek was killed at the beginning of April just weeks ago, and since her death other accidents (thankfully not fatal) have also occurred in the very same place. How long will it be before the next cyclist falls victim to the roads?

Please take a closer look at the London Cycle Safety petition created to put more pressure on Boris Johnson (Mayor of London) to introduce safety measures to protect cyclists in London. Please voice your opinion today: The petition will be handed over to Boris Johnson on the 8th June 2011.

Lunartic Cycle Bike Without Spokes
09/17/11
The aim was to use a hubless wheel to create a compact bicycle, with the benefits of a large wheel and belt drive. Hubless wheels have appeared in bicycle concepts already, and were first invented by Sbarro. However, few concepts have made it to prototype and when only used for aesthetic purposes, the disadvantage of extra cost out weights the visual gain. Lunartic uses the hubless for a reason; to house the working parts, reducing the wheel base but not sacrificing conventional riding geometry. Lunartic is supposed to be as compact as possible without folding or being awkward to ride, however there is the potential for the front wheel to fold up into the rear or for that space to be used for a laptop back, motor or dynamo. This first prototype proves the unique theory behind the design but will require further development before being ready for mass manufacture.

How To Choose The Correct Cycle Pedals
Bicycles have had a huge impact on society since their invention in the 19th century. Now numbering in the billions, they are the primary mode of transportation in many countries around the world. Recreational and competitive use, however, has benefited from technology which has moved them beyond children's toy to adult use in leisure and competitive activities. As a result, although the design of the bicycle has changed little, the need for cycle pedals to meet various needs has seen significant changes.
With the first transformation bicycles had what were called platform pedals. These were much like are found today on children's bikes as well as those used in adult leisure recreation. They have spikes, clips, and straps which help hold the foot in place and allow the transfer of energy from the leg to the foot and finally the pedal.
The first big change came about in 1985 when Bernard Hinault modified the traditional bicycle pedal into one that would clip on the cleat found on the sole of the bike shoes. This was the first of the "clipless" pedal models that eventually won him the Tour de France that year. Today a modified version of this model is used for those who are serious about road and mountain biking.
These pedals come in a variety of styles based on use. As a result, the price varies greatly as well. One model is the Shimano SPD M520L that comes with a cleat. Easier to engage and disengage they are also somewhat less expensive and are ideal for novice bicyclist. The smaller cleat also allows for easier walking after stepping off the bicycle. For those who ride on the road this particular model may not be ideal as it can cause vascular restriction and nerve impingement that may be quite uncomfortable during longer rides.

Mountain bikers have significantly different needs. Those who compete in cyclo-cross as well as mountain competitions find the ATAC Roc and cleat ideal due to the higher spring tension. Although it requires the rider to stomp the peddle harder in order to engage and disengage the system, the power it generates is worth the effort. Crank Brothers Candy C and cleat as well as the Crank Brothers Egg Beater is another choice that is great in muddy terrain. The wider platform on the pedal allows for greater power which is needed when resistance is higher.
Those who prefer the open road, whether in competition or not, find that the Shimano Ultegra pedal and Shimano SL cleats have one of the widest pedal-to-cleat interface surfaces available. According to those who prefer this style pedal they provide an increase in stability as well as power which is then transferred from the leg to the foot and finally onto the pedal. The price of the set varies widely depending on where it is purchased.
Similar to the Shimano is the Look KeO pedal with cleat. The biggest difference is the narrower cleat to pedal interface which allows the rider to disengage more smoothly. This model is often preferred by cyclists who have yet to experience a "clipless" pedal. One of the unique features of this pedal is the fact they come in fashion forward colors which can be selected to coordinate with the bike, striping, or accessories.
One of the most unique pedal designs has been created by Speedplay. The Speedplay X-Series, Zero, and Light Action clip to either side of the pedal and offer a 0 to 20 degree float. Feeling similar to the foot slipping on a piece of ice, it does provide more internal and external rotation of the heel which some cyclists prefer. With the smaller pedals and the increased rotation some users have found, however, that they experience discomfort in some form as well as develop rare cases of ITB injuries.
For many finding a free product is a bonus. Platform pedals are still available on many models of BMX bikes. Whether one elects to purchase recreational bicycles or track racers, the advantage of these pedals is the fact they don't require special shoes as well as the fact the rider is not actually attached to the bike. This can be a very disconcerting feeling new to "clipless" pedals especially during sudden stops. It's important to remember that at high speeds the "clipless" model can disengage whereas the toe clips and straps associated with platform pedals prevent slippage while on the bike.
The technological developments of recent years continue to improve not only bicycles themselves, but shoes and cycle pedals as well. For those who are avid hobbyist or competitors in the cycling world, having the right equipment is imperative. Research based on the type of sport preferred can help to eliminate the confusion often associated with the selection process.
